Heavy on the Soul: Ty Myers' Second Album

What the album is

Heavy on the Soul is Ty Myers’ sophomore record, released March 27, 2026. It follows The Select (January 2025) and arrived with the full infrastructure of a major label release behind it, including a 33-date headline tour.

The clearest thing about it is where it was made. FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Aretha Franklin recorded “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” there in 1967. Etta James recorded there. Sam Cooke did. Choosing FAME is a genre statement before a note plays.

He told Variety that once he decided on the soul and Motown direction, “the first place that popped into my mind was FAME and Muscle Shoals.” He also cites Jason Isbell, the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd as reasons the building appealed to him. The album’s unofficial subtitle is “The FAME Sessions.”

How it is different from The Select

He wrote The Select between roughly ages 12 and 17. As he put it, it “represents a lot of changing during very formative years.” It is a document of development rather than a single intent.

Heavy on the Soul is the opposite. He described it as “the first time that I actually got to write towards a project with a specific idea in mind.” The idea was soul. Everything, including the choice of studio, was pointed in that direction.

The genre result is audible. Saving Country Music described The Select as “a soulful and bluesy version of Texas country.” Heavy on the Soul goes further. The instrumentation includes steel guitar, used in his own words “not necessarily like dancehall steel” but “very moody.” Covers on The Select pointed at John Mayer. The cover on this album is Little Feat’s “Two Trains,” with Marcus King.

Where it sits in the release sequence

Heavy on the Soul follows the January 2025 album The Select. Before that album, Myers released a separate six-track Ends of the Earth EP in October 2024. AllMusic lists the EP as its own release, with a separate catalog entry. The title song is therefore both the EP’s title track and, later, the lead country-radio single from The Select. Those are two different release relationships, not conflicting claims.
